Help!

So you know how I said I was participating in Bloggiesta? Well one of my to-dos is the make a separate book blog. (More info to come.) I'm having a bit of an issue making the layout.... I found a perfect background and header to use but the site asks me to make a gadget and add it that way. However Blogger's default template covers it up and messes up things. How do I eliminate the default template? Anyone know?
